Obama and the anti-gun crusade aren't backing off anything. He's just using calming tactics to try and diffuse some of the gun supporters emotion. Think of it like this; someone is yelling at you mad as hell and you begin to talk quitely with calm tone. Re-assure them that you're not really a threat. The aggressor will eventually calm themselves. That's ALL they are looking to do is gain any advantage they can.
