I have passed the test. I let one of the big 8s walk. This is the one from a trail cam pick in mid Augusts, though he is no longer in velvet.

I might really regret that.

Right now (dusk) is primetime for those bucks moving to their staging areas to feed. If I were sitting right now,I would wait until it is literally dark.

I passed up the biggest buck I've ever passed up last year. He was a gorgeous 3.5 year old, and I mean really nice, but he was still young and will be nicer, plus I already had bigger bucks in there. The chance at one of those older bucks, or a chance at him this year convinced me to let him walk. As soon as he walked off I knew I had done the right thing. He may have been shot somewhere else, or died of who knows what, but he may still be around and a sure enough whopper this year. Its the chance we take. I believe you did the right thing.
