optics and scopes

What is the best optic to put on an AR15 for self defense as well as a longer range hunting optic . I want a scope but for my AR I don't want a regular hunting scope something a little more practical.

Define you're idea of self defense. Inside your house and long range hunting is a big gap.

Self Defense in my mind would be CQB....and I would go for a Red Dot/holographic

Long Range is an entirely different animal so I would go with a higher powered optic.

Something to consider is they make magnifiers for the red dot sights that can roll out of the way when not in use....this way you can use your red dot out to a farther distance.

Try a 1-4x scope.. Or an ACOG 4x and offset the irons so you can have something up close and personal.
