Would charging non-supporters $1 a month to post in the classifieds hurt the site?

I'm a newbie still but I believe in supporting sites i like thus I'm a supporter. But there are a lot of people who will always try to get something for nothing. IMHO if you play you gotta pay. I see so many people with high rankings that are not supporters selling a lot.

If I understood one above post that to become a supporter, you just have to pay $12 a year, then I have no problem with becoming a supporter to post ads. $10 a year is a bargain whether you post ads or not as their is sufficient expert gun info available on this site for the asking to justify even a higher membership fee!

Close - the idea was that you could do the classfieds only subscription for $10/year with no other supporter benefits. Currently a 1 year supporter subscription is $15/year which under this plan would include the classfieds and also includes the feed, fewer ads, custom user titles, etc.

If you do charge a fee then your Accts Receivable will be 65K+. So those who don't pay will be in the Allowance for Bad Debt. How long will you wait for them to pay up? If they don't are you going to turn them off? How will they get in touch with you to level their account and get re-instated? Are you ready to take on this nightmare ???

I like the site enough to support it. I think that it should remain a choice.

@Chase18 has a good idea. Maybe there is a way to treat supporter listings differently that would work.

If you are absolutely convinced that is the only way to stay afloat and I have worn out every other option it kind of makes this conversation worthless. You want to generate some more income to the site? You're a creative guy there are things that you can do for the site that no one else can and that's where my expiration would start.
Now if you totally going down that path and think that you have tried everything possible there's only two options either cut overhead or raise more capital but whatever you do don't raise Capital by selling off your members
