One visit to a Gun show, to buy or sell, costs at least 8 bucks, plus gas, and the hassle of parking.

That is a ONE day thing.

So how is 10 to 12 bucks a year a bad deal, for a seller .....especially when they should realize that the buyers (if they are ONLY buyers) pay absolutely zip.

Does that not increase the Buyers?

Is not the price for Sellers, compared to that, ridiculously low?

All in all, this site has been good to me, so I went in as a Supporter.

YMMV

I can see how it could be a deterrent for some people who have just an occasional item to sell or trade. However if this is what is needed to keep the site going, then that is what must be done. $1 isn't that much.... Hopefully they will come back and become a supporter later on.

I've been on ebay for 20+ years selling items and always accepted paying them a percentage was a cost to me to get some money for something I no longer wanted/needed.

BTW...I just became a supporter. :grouphug:

While I'm not on ODT that often I have always enjoyed the site and appreciate all of the work it takes to keep it going. Thanks to Okuma for that! The forums have been fun to peruse and I also glance through the classifieds just to see what's out there.

In an effort to get away from outside advertising (and to stay afloat :D ) I'm having to consider some very major changes to how the site raises money. In the past I've relied very heavily on outside ad networks to supply our ads to us, but in the last year the landscape has changed and a lot of gun forums are having a very rough go of it, including us.

One idea I am seriously considering is charging $1 a month to post ads in the classifieds for non-supporters and leave it free for supporters.

So for $1 a month you could post 5 listings per category per day (Just like it is now). Would also offer it for $10 a year if you didn't want to become a supporter and just wanted the classifieds, which would make it an even cheaper $0.83 per month.

Do you think this would kill the site? My opinion has always been that charging money would kill the site, but I feel like $1 a month for non-supporters is cheap enough that people wouldn't leave over it. If this change was enacted and we didn't lose any traffic I would be able to shut off outside ads. (which would be amazing and make the site run faster, we would never have malware or popups again and could remove all outside ad tracking)

I'd love to hear everyone's opinions, especially non-supporters. Any posts that "supporter shame" anyone will be removed to keep this on topic.

Thanks!
I think it's a fine idea. Alot of us are supporters anyway.

$10 or $12 a year is a definitely a deal to advertise on here. !

I became a supporter again only because I need a place to give my guns away and still have people say “what’s your bottom dollar” or have them look me dead in the eye and say “ never had a malfunction .....ever” when they know they are selling me a jam-o-matic. Oh ...and because I met one of my bestestest friends on here.
