Is the site worth it?
Yes.

Would I do it?
Yes.

Would it be bad for the site?
Probably.

Charging money for things that have always been free is a slippery slope. There will be a loss of content, and there will be less new ads and items for sale, that will ultimately force people to other places or just ordering from an online retailer, local gun store, etc.

Just my .02 - I wish you well regardless of your decision.
Content is irrelevant, as has been explained, ad activity isn’t there and revenues have fallen from that.

I've also had one of those and it shocked me lol. I learned real quick if it sounds too good to be true... It is. I guess I really should say I prefer not to deal with 0 feedback members, since we deal with firearms I like to know that someone has been vetted a little but I still may give them a chance if not.

I just make sure that with any non established member that we have the deal confirmed in PMs.
I'm not anal about 10 or 15 minutes at the meet, I usually got an hour or so to burn.

The last 3 or 4 deals I've made were with 0 to very low FB.
The last several people to waste my time had 30+ FB.
I'm more inclined to play along with established members, but The percentage of douchbags is about the same.

So let's say that with those caveats, that 14k number is less than half that... Lets say it is only 6k actual paid member users in the end...

That's still $60k a year. More than enough for a nice honeymoon. :-)
Probably a good bit of that goes to bandwidth and hosting fees. Also you have to pay developers to have the features we all like.

Wow, Grown men complain about spending a Dollar for a service?! Want the Government to pay for it for you?

Maybe a designated number of classifieds for free, then they have to pay? That way they could get a sample.
I was hooked after being on the other website before the swap and sale got a lobotomy.

Just testing the waters.

Why would anyone care how much this site makes? If I found out Okuma made two million (profit) per year, I’d only think, “good for him.”

What this site makes ain’t no bodies damn business. If there is a cost, you either pay it or you don’t, but how much he will make is not your concern. My sole problem with this forum remains, and I think I have been pretty consistent here, ****ty mods and Steve turning a blind eye to it.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, if it were me, I’d leave the discussion threads free for everyone, but only supporters would be able to use the classifieds, send/receive PM’s, get access to the user groups, have access to the feed, and be eligible for giveaway day. Boom. Quick and easy.

The question of this thread is, “will it hurt the forum”? The answer to that is yes. At least initially. After that, I think it comes back stronger and better for it.

Is this relevant or have I gone off on a “tangent” OFH? Lol.

I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about internet ads, running a web site and such. Having said that I have assumed for years that Okuma was at least making a nice profit. He should. He has taken the risk in the beginning, putting his time and money into it. He doesn't owe us anything, if we enjoy and use his "product" he should be fairly compensated. Most of the whiners in this thread would not do 15 min of work a week without wanting to get paid a fat executives salary for it. As for those who don't like the rules or the mods, get together and pool your resources and start your own site. Check back in 9 years and let us know how it went for you. We will still be here
