Private School vs Public School

Where I live in SW Georgia, the public schools are not where you want to send your kids. So my former wife and I decided to send our daughter to private Christian schools which worked out well as her high school years were all college prep. She graduated near the top of her class and went on to college after earning a four year basketball scholarship. My former wife was a school teacher who taught in a local public school but chose not to renew her contract. She obtained a teaching position at each of the three Christian schools that my daughter attended. Because the wife worked there, we received discounted tuition which was a big help.

Both my kids are at Woodward, but that is because my local public schools stink. Elementary had half the kids with English as a second language, and the rate of study was poor.

That said, My sisters girls went through the Dunwoody public schools and aced it, one at GT the other at The Honors College at UGA. Cobb Co schools are great as are Milton and John's Creek. I am in Sandy Springs, eat up with apartments from Roswell Road full of "illegals".

I have offered to move to those locations, but my ex would not discuss removing them from private. So, I am stuck.

@OP, Paideia School will churn out good students full of the liberal doctrine.....

I taught public ed for 30 years, and sent my last three kids to private Christian school. Most important to me was knowing that the institution would support our following Jesus, not seek to tear down our beliefs. There is plenty of worldliness in these schools also, but at least not curricular and faculty attacks on Christianity.

I attended Northeast Comprehensive Highschool and Gladiator Academy in Macon. It wasn't too bad in the early 80's. If I thought the teacher was drinking, on drugs or just plain didn't care, I'd forge Sgt. Ikner's signature on a hall pass and slip into the school library to read history books.

My brothers attended private school here in the early to late 80's. I doubt I'd subject a child to Bibb Co Public Schools today if I could in any way afford to do otherwise.

I went to very good public schools, and I'm dismayed at how they've deteriorated over the decades since.

Is there anything left that government still does well?

Had a great time growing up in public schools back in the 70's. Mrs Crawford would always take a few minutes during the day in 4th grade to read the bible and talk about the passage - but that's another subject for another day.

My twins have grown up with public schools. It was like getting a pay raise when they both got into pre-K. But I think Johns Creek has some of the best public schools in the state. I may be biased.

Both my boys are staunch conservatives. Love to shoot. One plays football the other runs cross country and they both participate in the track program in the Spring.

Parents gotta parent. Bottom line. I'm not saying I'm a great parent because I learn something new every day.

Plus, we couldn't afford private school, so there's that. Shoot, saving up for college is hard enough as it is!
