Project - 72 C10

I have 4 full size American trucks and can’t drive due to seizures - GRRRR !! :frusty: (lol)
But I can work on them occasionally. I do have the means and tool and place, sometimes I just lack the
”ass” ! :becky:

Haha, so you would think halfway there. But no this was only the first 10%.
I was just looking at paint - guessing.
I was not including anything like body work , but yeah, they can be a lot of work. Always something more that needs to be done ! :)
( said from a “mechanic” perspective)

So now the frame was cut down and I had the short bed at the house I had to try it on for size. At this point I decided the whole truck would need a repaint. There was no way I could match the crappy blue paint and I did not want a black and blue truck.

Liking the short bed look already. So in order to pain it properly I decided to strip it all the way down to the metal. Since I was stripping all of th epaint off I might as well go ahead and fix all of the rust issues. So new inner and outter rockers and a new cab corner were in order. FYI I am not a welder by trade as you can tell from my photos. But hey I am learning.

Once the rust repair was completed I got to work on stripping all of the 50 year old paint off. My lack of motivation on this part of the job kinda extended the project for quite some time. But eventually I got it all stripped and started the body work.

One of the cool things about these old trucks is the gas tank is in the cab with you. Well I’m a not big on riding around with 20 gal of gasoline 3 inches from my backside. So I figured I might as well relocate the gas tank under the bed away from me.

This ment a new gas tank was needed. Also I did not want to run a 15 ft long rubber hose from the tank to the carburetor so new hard fuel lines were also ordered. Also had to figure out how to get gas in the tank since it would be under the bed.

So after a lot of grinding the filling then sanding the final out come was a gas tank out of the cab and the fuel filler looking pretty good in the bed.

Well with all of the rust gone and the new gas tank installed it was finally time for paint. 3 months to figure out the color and another 3 months to get up the nerve to start spraying.

I decided on Porsche Grey Black or Grauschwarz if your German. Here is the color on a Porsche.

So for the Truck since it was down to bare metal I sprayed an Epoxy primer first to hopefully stop it from rusting again for a decade or two, maybe. This stuff sprayed very well, I felt like a pro after spraying this stuff.

After the Epoxy primer came some minor filler work and then 2K primer. The sandable stuff that fills in minor imperfections and really makes the paint job stand out. Again, this stuff sprayed great and sanded even better. By the way I hate sanding! it really sucks. I sanded the entire interior and exterior of the truck down to 600 grit. In fact sanding sucks worse than stripping all of the paint with the wire wheel and other tools. But once it was all sanded down and looking good I really felt like this might just turn out pretty nice after all.

So some primer picts.

Kinda funny looking back at all of this. For 18 months my garage was a total mess, I had truck parts stored accross 3 bays and all of the grinding dust and then sanding dust. I am still trying to clean it all up. Also the wife is very happy she gets to park in the garage every night now.
