now those mean had real balls, most of the stuff they were doing to cars was all new and they never really knew what would happen with most of them. also cars back then could still go pretty fast but had a much harder time coming to a stop so that always makes things more lively

He had to do the mechanical work on the car during the race. Since they didn't have mirrors or radios, he spotted other drivers and communicated that info to the driver. He also communicated with the crew in the pits via hand signals.

they had to keep the oil pump primed and ignition timing adjusted for power
