Yep, the first and last pic is the way mine need to mount.

I run the biggest ball mount they make on my HDS Gen3 12 inch unit at dash and the next smaller one on my 9 inch unit up front on my ranger. They never move.

Sorry to hear your not happy with them. Like I stated above I am now running them on my 3RD boat with no problems. Maybe you should contact Ram,they have great customer service. These have not moved in 3 years.
