Another option is the H&R Pardner Pump. It's a true 870 clone since Remjngton bought H&R. I got one for $200 at Academy.
I just bought a new RIA shotgun for my son for his Birthday. The shells would not leave the tube when pumping it...upon inspection, I noted that the right side extractor was dragging the shell to the side rather than moving out of the way to release it. I guess I should have taken it back but it seemed an easy enough fix and it was. I used a dremel to grind down about 1/32 off the tip of the extractor and smoothed it down with polishing wheel. I guess the biggest challenge was getting that little spring to stay put while putting it back together. It cycles great now. For a HD shorty...it sure is heavy though! I don't regret the purchase but I won't be trading in my Fab Arms or 870s any time soon.
I'd go with the maverick 88, it's very similar to the mossberg 500 except for location produced and safety location, and you can find parts for it everywhere even walmart. and the model has beewn proven reliable over time
