Ruger Mini 14 - The Good, Bad & Ugly?

Yes it is.I would almost go as far and say I would put my Mini 14 up against any Ar15 as far as reliability on firing and feeding.
I like the wood and steel part of the Mini 14/30 over the AR design. Over the years I've heard lots of people say that they couldn't get a decent group out of a Mini 14. The only other beef I would have with one is expensive mags. And very recently I've seen a guy in Centerville Gun claiming the Pro Mags he bought for his Mini were just plain junk. So avoid Pro Mags. Why can't we get Ruger to build Minis that use AR mags like the Kel Tec SU rifles? That would be a win.
I've been a Mini-14 owner since 1976. A 180 series Liberty rifle and a Mini-30 and now a 581 series. As long as you use factory magazines you can't go wrong with a Mini-14.
I've got decades of trigger time and the Mini-14 will not let you down. Realistically with open sights it's at best a 200 yard rifle. With a scope and Ruger scope rings you can shoot accurately out to 300+ yards. If you wanted a piston driven, easy to clean super reliable rifle for close-in to moderate ranges buy a Mini-14. With the right after market stock you can add rails etc. I'm also an AR owner and find the Mini-14 more fun to shoot than an AR-platform.

Great feedback. I had a chance to take a look at the Ruger Mini 14 today. A little heavier than expected, but nothing that I couldn't get used to. Unfortunately they didn't have a synthetic in stock for comparison. Will see if Cherokee Gun & Pawn has both where I can throw them up side by side.
Nice guns... kind of heavy for what they are but a classic design. The new ones are also pretty accurate now as well. One downside is the proprietary magazines though. They are a little on the pricey side compared to AR mags.
