Steel target question

S

So would i need ar550 or 5/8". Sorry this is all new to me and I'm trying to keep the cost of my purchases below the wifes radar.
You really can't shoot rifles that close without eating some fragments and really being risky. If you need to do it that close for some type of training or something, use frangible ammo. If you want that rifle feel and the ability to safely shoot your steel targets close get a pistol caliber carbine.

I would not think 10MM at 50 yds would crater 3/8" AR500. See the pics below and the caliber and distance they were shot from. All are 3/8" AR500. I have shot .308 at 50 yds. But as other have said it has to be mounted properly. And at 50 yds it does pock mark the target.

.223 around 3000 FPS at about 40 yds.

.556 at around 3200 FPS at same distance. Notice more divots in metal.

.338 lapua 90 yds.

.50 at 400 and 200 yards.

You could buy some frangible ammo if you wanted to shoot that close with 308. 5.56/.223 will still dimple crappy ar500 targets at 100 yards. 308 can crater with enough abuse right at 100 lol. I've shot 7.62x39 at 60-70 yards with no visible damage to ar500. It's a lot slower than 308 though. I don't think all ar500 is created equally either. I don't think you should be able to crater your target with 10mm. How close were you shooting the 10mm?
I started around 7yds and ended up moving back to 20yds. I was surprised also about the 10mm the first stuff I bought was supposedly rated to 44mag but I also bought the cheapest I could find on the web. My second purchase was more reputable stuff. I think it was endorsed by mrgunsandgear.

.308 147fmj at around 50 yds out of a Savage Scout Rifle. 3/8" AR500.

Thanks for all the input everybody. I feel I have a much better grasp on what to expect now. I really dig the pics. Y'all have a happy and blessed Easter. He is risen! God bless.

I have around 40 pieces of rifle steel, AR500 and AR550. While the recommendation is 100yds, I’ve shot 1/2” AR500 at 50yds with a.300WinMag more times than I can count. Hasn’t done more than knock the paint off.

If 10mm is starting to crater it, I doubt it’s AR500.

Hang it so it swings freely or on springs to give it "somewhere to go" when hit. I don't like shooting steel with rifles at less than 100 yards.
Pistols at 20 yards, but that's just me. Buy 1/2" AR500 or better. Don't let people shoot shot out Mosins at your steel as the ammo when shot from a good bore will not dent your steel, when shot from a sewer pipe that keyholes will leave huge sideways bullet craters in your 'armor' plate.
