Stevens Single 16 Project...

I used to have a gunsmith cut my old double barrels to 18 1/8" and sight bead reinstalled.
One of the coolest guns I ever owned....or so I thought in my 20's....was a double barreled Stevens (I think) el cheapo that I got at a pawn shop for less than $100. I used a hacksaw (yup) and cut the barrels down to 18.5" and cold blued the ends after some sanding to straighten and plumb them out. Took the stock off and cut it down and shaped it into mare's leg-ish/ pistol grip. I thought it was the baddest thing around. And then I took it to the range and shot it from the hip and dang near broke my wrist. Sold it at a gun show a month or so later and doubled my money.

What you're describing is THE shotgun I've wanted since my early teens. And last year(ish) I traded into an OLD Ithaca side by side 12. I did cut several inches off of it. I even borrowed a portable band saw to get a straight cut. Well...I got a nice clean cut but it was anything but straight. I filed on that sumbitch for days. I dabbed the cold blue on the finished product. I can't bring myself to cut the stock down. That wood is old and probably fragile as hell.

Take the wood off and clean it, set it aside. Then remove the finish, make sure you clean off any and all finish remover. Then buy some krylon primer, lay a good coat on it, wait a week, and paint it with a flat/ mat black ( or color of your choosing) . Then put it back together. You can buy 16 gauge to 20 gauge reducer and shoot 20 gauge out of it or any of the other reducers they sell. Trust me , simple and clean is better than all the other stuff.

BTW... you also described the experience I had shooting the Shockwave 12 I inherited. Holy ****! I loaded 5 rounds fired 3 and unloaded 2. NOT a fun gun to shoot. It's kinda like a modern day wall hanger.

I redid a very nice H&R with ejectors couple of years back. It had the case colored receiver. I had to weld on a new barrel lug, reblued the barrel, refinish the wood and made a custom recoil pad. It was my friends last remaining gun if his Dad’s

Wish I had one now to work on.
