My random thought almost every time I see rain clouds approaching:

How do dark clouds, the kind that carry rain, float a mile or more above the surface of the Earth? Isn't the clear air underneath them less dense ? How can Air that carries so little moisture content that it looks perfectly clear be denser than air (dark clouds) that is absolutely laden with water that is about to drop on your city and flood your streets?

If the dark clouds are denser (mass per same unit of volume) than the clear air beneath them, why don't the clouds settle to ground level and the clear air rise above?
