This looks pretty cool... Ruger American Rifle in 7.62x39

Not surprised. It's a popular caliber, but I think a lot of people turned up their noses at it saying there wasn't a point for this caliber. I want one to plink with.

There are a few companies making it now with the surge in suppressor sales. Can't think of the names off the top of my head.

Bought the last one they had at AO on Saturday. Not any deal but once I handled it I knew I wasn't leaving without it.

I haven't had a chance to do more than wipe the packing iol off it yet. It's pretty light, and my 30 YHM can screws on just fine, so there's that.

One thing that threw both me and the salesman is that it has a last-round bolt hold open.

He opened the bolt when he handed it to me and I spent 10-15 seconds trying to figure out why it wouldn't close again before I remembered that you have to pop the empty mag out to close it. He missed that and I have to admit I let him struggle with it for a few seconds when I handed it back to him with the bolt open as well.

I'll probably throw a 3x red dot I have around on it and take it out for a test run this week.

Makes sense using the mini 30 mags. Interesting though. Not a feature seen on most modern bolt guns.

Well, I got it out to the range last night. Just indoors at QuickShot, so 20 yards is it, but that was OK to get a feel for the gun and sight it in. I put a Vortex Diamondback 3-9 I had kicking around on it, so I spent the first 20 minutes or so getting it sighted. Shooting off my range bag I was getting 1-1.5" groups without putting any real effort into it.

Once I got sighted I was shooting one-ragged-hole off the bag with both the steel case (Wolf, Golden Tiger and some other Russian stuff) and some real mil-surp brass ammo (S African I think).

The action is a little stiff, but it got better with the 80 or so round I put through it, so I think it'l break in pretty well. Both my 20-round Mini-30 mags and the 5-rounder they supply worked just fine with the gun. Once I got the can on there it started heating up pretty good as well, and since there's not a lot of meat in the forestock, gloves might be handy if you are running a lot of ammo through it.

When I put the YHM QD mount on it I thought I missed something, since it didn't screw on by hand. After checking they were both 5/8"-24 I got out a wrench and found that it was simply 'tight'. I guess just slightly different thread angles, but not sure who's 'wrong'. Anyway, at least the mount is tight and I didn't have to worry about LocTite or anything.

It's hard to tell indoors but the extra volume on the 308 YHM Phantom seemed to give it a really nice 'thump'. I have no idea if it's hearing safe, and I'm sure there's still the supersonic 'crack', but overall it did as well as a rifle round could be expected.

In all, it's a pretty good little rifle. It's a good companion gun if you already have a Mini-30, and even if you have an AK or SKS it's nice to share ammo. You could definitely hunt with it, even offhand I was able to drop it in a three-inch target (again at 20 yards) routinely. It would also be a good gun just to plink around with out in the woods, or if you wanted a 'truck gun" that you could shoot on the cheap and which could take some abuse.
