Travel by Vehicle through New England to Canada

You can pass through NY legally. Box up your weapon and lock it in the trunk is fine.
Be a dumbass and have it on you/arms reach, win stupid prizes.
NYC is off limits even with a NYS issued permit.

Rifle or shotgun... definitely not pistol in the state of NY

Transporting Firearms Through New York

The best way to travel through NY or any state that has restriction is to carry a copy of Title 18-Part 1- Chapter 44 926A of the federal code with you. Some law enforcement may not know the law. DO keep the firearm in a locked box. Keep ammo in another locked box. No ammo in Magazines or speed loaders in the trunk or if no trunk as far back in the vehicle as possible in a locked box. By NY Law if you are traveling across the state and can legally possess the firearm where you started and where you are going you can transport it as above. But if you stop in NY and spend the night in a motel/hotel/camp ground etc you are in violation of NY law and can be arrested if found with a firearm. Stopping for gas and food would most likely be OK but this is not a given in NY.

United States Code Title 18 - Part I - Chapter 44 § 926A. Interstate Transportation of Firearms Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

In other words, stay the **** out of NY.

In other words, stay the **** out of NY.
I had the same issue when my youngest son still lived in PA - driving through MD with 2 ARs, 2 handguns, and a shotgun and I got a flat tire just south of the PA line. Luckily I didn't have to spend the night there and worry about going to prison for a flat tire.

I plan on having a full fuel tank when I enter NY and don't plan on slowing down. I've seen NY before and ain't interested in seeing it again.

I do have the appropriate lock boxes.

I may end up leaving my guns at home but don't look forward to doing so. I've carried for years and it will seem odd. Lot's of trouble to see some whales, catch a fish and eat some lobster!

Well, I just returned from my trip and had an awesome time!

I'll begin by saying that I did decide to leave the firearms at home.

Matthew almost put a kabosh on the trip but rather than cancelling I just pulled an audible and moved the first part of our vacation a bit west and headed to Niagara Falls, Ontario rather than running up the east coast as originally planned. We spent the first night in Barboursville, WV and then headed for Canada.

When we arrived at the Canadian border there was about a 45 minute wait in line. When we reached the gate/booth I handed our passports out the window. The officer looked at it, looked at me and asked "You from Georgia?" "Yes Sir", I replied. "Do you have any of your guns with you?" I was a bit taken back by his assumption but politely answered "No Sir!", to which he told me to enjoy my visit and off we went.

We spent 2 days in Niagara Falls and surrounding area, took the boat ride into the mist of the Falls one morning and then took the night time ride back into the Falls for the fireworks show.

Spectacular!!! If you've never been, GO!

So we get up on the morning of our 3rd day there and head over to the "Rainbow Bridge" to re-enter the USA. No wait whatsoever. I pull up to the gate, hand the officer our passports, he scans the wife's, no problem. Then he scanned mine and a siren went off and from out of nowhere eight other agents surrounded my truck! I was ordered to place my hands on the dash and was asked if I had any weapons of any sort. I replied that I only had a pocket knife. The agent asked where it was to which I replied, "In my pocket."

That agent began yelling "He's got a knife! He's got a knife!!!" "Shut off the truck NOW!" "GET OUT OF THE TRUCK!"

Well, I did and I remained calm as this nice fellow put me in an arm bar and pulled me to the back of my truck where had me "assume the position" as he gave me a pat down that had me wondering if we shouldn't have dinner first! He kept asking "Where's the knife?" And I kept telling him "In my pocket!"

He finally found it. It was in the coin pocket of my jeans. Good sized knife. I have no idea why he could not find the thing. He took the knife and all the other contents of my pockets and then another gentleman put me back in a arm bar and three of them escorted me into the facility.

I cooperated all the way.

Once inside they asked me no questions and gave me no information about why I was being detained. They fingerprinted me while a couple of men and a dog searched my truck, luggage etc.

Five minutes later they handed me my stuff back, gave me my keys and said "OK. You may go now". No explanation. No sorry for the inconvenience, kiss my grits or anything.

For the first time I asked them what this was all about. "You have a common name and it triggered our computer", was all the explanation I got.

I found my wife on a bench in the hallway crying her eyes out. They had told her nothing and she had witnessed them taking me into the facility "like a criminal!" That broke my heart and for the first time during the encounter I began to boil.

I choked down my emotions and tried to console her, got in the truck and drove away, telling her that it was OK, they were just doing their job.

It didn't take me too long to get her smiling again as I made light of the situation as we headed off toward Maine via Vermont & New Hampshire and then down for a couple of days walking the hallowed ground of Gettysburg before heading home.

It was a awesome vacation. The Fall foliage in New England was peak and the lobster was as good as it gets! And Gettysburg...if you've never been, go!

Am I upset with our border guard? A bit. Why was I singled out? What triggered it? Firearm purchases? Political activism? I've searched the internet for deplorable people with my name but find none any more deplorable than I.

By the way, I don't recommend carrying a gun into Yankeeland! I'm proud I didn't.

How does it feel being treated like a criminal for no reason?
They then tell you "**** you" like they did nothing wrong? You should be able to do the same thing to them and see how they like it. People wonder why law enforcement has such a bad image.
