My 5 year old daughter has hunted hard with me during the Christmas break. We never did see a buck, but we saw alot of does. It was buck only at my Carroll County lease until 12/26. We were able to get out to the lease on 12/30/14 for a morning hunt. We were sitting on an interior logging road watching over a clearcut. The roadbed divides the clearcut from a section of 10+ year old planted pines. The deer often cross the road on their way to feed/bed. Seven does emerged from the clearcut and approached the road crossing. The lead doe worked her way up the hill and into the road at 100 yards. We already had the rifle up on the shooting sticks and ready for the shot. Mya settled the crosshairs on the deer's neck. The doe dropped in her tracks when the 55 grain Barnes TSX found it's mark. After a lengthy celebration we went and put our hands on her first deer ever!
I had to work New Year's Eve, so on Jan 1st we went back out for an evening hunt. It was very warm and we figured that the last few minutes of the afternoon would be when the deer would move. We were sitting in the same spot where Mya shot her first deer two days prior. We had a doe come in behind us at 5:00, but it caught us moving as we tried to get turned around for a shot.
With only minutes remaining in the Northern Zone season, another doe stepped out of the pines and into the roadbed. I did a mouth bleat to stop the deer as Mya got the rifle into position. This deer was about 125 yards away. It seemed like an eternity, but it only took a few seconds for the shot to ring out. Deer #2 of my Daughter's hunting career dropped in its tracks as well from another well placed neck shot!
This time my Father was there to share the moment with us. I'm so proud of my Daughter for keeping her composure and making two rather long shots for a five year old child. God has blessed us indeed!
