Soaring crime in Caracas throughout 2014 has given it the unenviable ranking of second most violent city in the world, with a murder rate of 155 for every 100,000 inhabitants, according to Mexican NGO Security, Justice, and Peace. In the Venezuelan capital, not even the state’s security forces are safe: during the first 29 days of 2015, criminals murdered 13 of the city’s uniformed officers. Circumstances varied, but in the majority of cases, the perpetrators killed police to steal their firearms.

My wife is from there (Caracas) and still has a lot of family down there. It is really a bad situation down there. All of her relatives who have money have to have their houses surrounded by electric fences and have big dogs and security guards keeping watch. Even with all that, it still isn't enough. She recently had cousins who were tied up at gun point for hours while their home was completely ransacked; clothes, appliances, food, etc. Problem in Venezuela is if you kill a bad guy who is trying to (fill in the blank) the rest of their gang will come back and kill you for killing one of their guys. I have been criticized by some of her family members for all the guns I have (why do you need all those guns anyways, isn't one enough) and I remind them that in their country where they have "severe" gun control, the only people with guns are the police and the criminals who outnumber them. Several family members have been kidnapped and killed down there. I guess once you are trained to have a mindset (no guns makes us safer) there is no going back.

Sadly some folks think they can protect themselves by disarming themselves. It's a contradiction of terms and in practice deadly for those that embark on that path.

These people were severely restricted from firearms possession, unless military or LEO. They were only allowed .22 LR rifles and shotguns. All legal firearms had to be registered and a strict renewal process abided by. Transportation had to be carefully documented. When civil unrest grew, in June of 2012 the government banned all civilian ammunition and firearms possession. Hugo said he would give the citizens time to obey. The government knew where all the legal firearms were (.22 LR rifles and shotguns).

I posted video of a protestor being escorted down a side street then shot in April 2013.

This is how people forfeit their liberty, rights and speech. It's a time honored process, repeated in the almighty name of needed "public Safety" and far too many naïve will willfully offer their throats in complete ignorance.

Educate your family members on just how gun "control" serves them, German Jews, Cambodians etc.

Pay particular attention to Pol Pots' systematic methodology and learn. Anyone considered a threat to the government was ordered to re-education (death) camps, report to town hall to never be seen again (killing fields) even the children were murdered to prevent revenge upon the government. Nearly all the educated were systematically identified and exterminated.

It starts with silence the voice of the people. 2010: http://www.hrw.org/news/2010/12/22/venezuela-legislative-assault-free-speech-civil-society

The next step is to disarm the people and best if they do this willfully, you know to lower crime and enhance public safety, 2012: http://www.examiner.com/article/venezuela-s-chavez-bans-gun-ownership-and-firearms-sales

It is a repeatable human event with monotonous repetition. I wish your family there the best but unarmed in the middle of a revolution places them at a distinct disadvantage. I hope they comprehend the risk they incur.
