We always called them writing spiders because of the design in the web. Also heard them called garden spiders and banana spiders. As a kid, I would catch grasshoppers and throw them into the web.

Seriously do this...find a cricket or grasshopper and throw into web. You will be amazed and horrified how fast she works.
