What long guns are so iconic that everyone should own one?

Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 pre 1990
AR15
Marlin 336 30-30 JM stamped
Marlin Glenfield model 60 1980 or before
Remington 870 wingmaster 12 gauge pre 1990
All of these guns have one thing in common. Good old american inginuity and manufacturing.

Winchester Model 100 .308

In my opinion, one must have a lever action rifle. Great rifles, with a wonderful history. I would go with a 30/30 model, but one in 45/70.....well, that is nice.

I’m going way back to a Sharps rifle.

More modern - a 742 Woodsmaster, like it or hate it.

My choice also, great guns but need a little more maintenance than most,
Remington 1100 is one of the best shotguns period.
Browning a bolt, great shooter out of the box.
And the iconic side by side double barrel, ( brands not to important )
22 lever guns, just because they're cool.

I’d take this in a slightly different direction, and instead of proposing particular guns, I would propose that every American family/adult male should have:

1) a rimfire for pest control/to learn on
2) something to put dinner on the table
3) something for individual/household defense
4) something to go to battle with

Obviously there’s going to be overlap, and room for specialization. But we should think in these terms.
