What's the point of a silencer on a 5.56x45 AR 15?

they hurt your ears so bad from the noise and the recoil breaks your shoulders but folks like shiny trinkets in their possession

You think they would just put all that extra weight on the end of their AR's and .308's for looks?

They reduce muzzle flash, but more importantly they reduce the muzzle signature of firearms (especially rifles) that they are attached to. A properly suppressed firearm will still entail having a sonic boom from the rifle round breaking the sound barrier, but you will be much less likely to know from which direction the shot was fired...
