What's your gun owner approach? Only own what you shoot? The more, the better?

I do not feel that you can look at guns from strictly an investment stand point but if the SHTF, I bet any gun you own will be a very valuable commodity.
I hunt so there is a need for me to have many different calibers for the various game I chase; I have a pile of hunting weapons. My problem is my hunting armament is much larger than my anti- personnel/anti-zombie weaponery; given the direction of the country, I feel that even with all my hunting weapons, I am outgunned during a catostrophic event.
For this reason I am aggressively buying weapons that allow me and my family to "level the playing field" in a bad situation. If these weapons sit in my safe but give me the piece of mind to sleep well knowing I can defend my home and loved ones, I am very happy to look at them just sitting there. It is the equivilent of insurance to me; you pay all those premiums in the event of a catostrophic event and guns are cheap insurance when you think about it.
Then again I can always take the vice president's advice. Walk out on the porch with my granfather's dounble barrel, fire both barrels, and the threat should immediately flee!

I get an interest in a type of shooting then look for the right gun for it. All my guns have a purpose even if it has been a long time since I have used it for that purpose. ( Breda 20 gauge) I have 3 different .22 rifles, each for a specific event. Keep in mind plinking is a purpose. If I had the money I would certainly buy guns that I thought were interesting or attractive. At this time they are all shooters and there are quite a few less now than there were just a few years ago.

I'm not wealthy by *ANY* means, but I'm at the point in life that I can rub a few coins together in my pocket. For the past few years, I've been picking up a gun here, a gun there. Find a deal on one, get a fancy for one, pick it up.

But now I'm starting to think, if you don't carry something, or if you don't go shoot it on a fairly regular basis, what's the point of having it? It's just a safe queen, a high dollar paper weight.

So, what's your approach to gun ownership? Bare bones, just keep what I use, or the more, the merrier?

Lately I've been feeling the exact same way you do so I've been contemplating thinning out my collection. I don't know the answer but you're not alone. I shoot about once or twice a month (all I can afford). I have a couple of things I haven't shot in 6 months. It does seem a touch pointless; at least for me personally anyway.
