In a word, Yes.

So he should have stayed home, with the possibility of those murderers, possibly still armed, kicking in the door, killing him, and his child. Maybe leaving wouldn't be everyone's decision, but I can't justify someone calling him a coward for his action.

You can't second guess what another man should or shouldn't have done in a situation like that with 2 hard core murdering convicts coming towards him and his child. Fight or flight

I wouldn't have been loading my firearms, to start with.
I wouldn't have been taking my child outside with the criminals.

I would however took my firearms off safety, placed my finger on the triggers, pointed at their heads, and dared them to breath heavy.
Yes I would have a firearm in each hand, one for the each of them.
