who's been to Germany?

Sometimes I wish I went active duty, been then I remember how good the reserves has been to me. It would be nice to go to Germany for free, but its one country ive always wanted to vacation in. That and Japan and UK

LOL> England was fun too. Most of that trip was drunk as well though. Drinking Guinness from dawn to dusk will do that to you.

Whats the rate of people who speak english there? I was under the impression that most German schools actually require English to graduate their version of highscool?

The one beer I have never found after leaving Germany was calld a Dampfbier. Of all the beers in Germany that I tried that was my favorite. And damn a Weissen. Also Pilsener (Pilz) is German domestic(not for export) beer. What they send us is called "Export" So when in country drink only pilz. One other beer that impressed me was Lowenbrau Pilz. Prounounced Loovenbroy and roll the R.

Germany is filled woth happy history as well as the WWII history. Do keep in mind that they are( or at least were) rather sensitive about their national part in WWII.
Didn't think about that.. even though most of them probably didnt have a part in it?

When I was there...keep in mind it was mid 80's, probably 40% spoke some English. You could get around fine and ordering food and beer was easy.

Got any relatives who remember WWII? So do they. Only they lost. And their nation was vilified as all Nazis and evil. And they have buildings that are either still destroyed or still bear scars from tanks and bombs. The ones I met when I was there(remember, 30 years ago) were mostly ashamed of the national history. And they are such good people in general that I would never want to insult them or be snotty about it. They do have much heritage to be proud of and if you express interest in that they appreciated it so much. Times change though. it's a new generation now so they may not care any more.

Germany is a piece of cake man, you are going to love it. While in Berlin do not miss the Pergamon Museum on museum island. The Eqyption artifacts are beyond comprehension. Its like getting a side bonus trip to Egypt, without the risk.

I dont have any relatives that are alive and WWII vets.. one Korea and one Vietnam. I was born in 91 so they were dying off as I was growing up, I would never be snotty or ask inappropriate questions, Im just more curious in history and such. I plan on learning as much German as I can prior, as I can get around with the bare minimum German.
