You get your money back. It is very rare for an item to be paid for after the transaction with NFA. The only exceptions I've seen are for very expensive machine guns.

Just to be clear, when I say buy it means you pay upfront and the items sits in your dealers safe until the paperwork comes back. As with anything, check with who you are buying from first. Make sure there isn't a refund/restocking fee, etc.

What are the chances it will be turned down? Local dealer told me if you have a permit then you should be in the clear.

It's usually only turned down for failure to pass a background check or really messed up paperwork. On the paperwork, if there are minor corrections needed the examiners are good about letting you fix it and get it approved.

Call the ATF NFA Branch.
You'll get one of the following answers:
It is not in the system.
It is pending.
It has been approved.

If you're lucky you might get the examiner it is assigned to.

I just sent it off 2 weeks ago, so I'm pretty sure I won't be seeing a pending or approved for a while...

Just called in...I got the "its not in the system" answer. I just wanted to know if the check cleared. The gun shop here had sent in the check for me.
