The Art of Hunting Big Game in North America is the only secular book I've ever read more than once.
I love all the 08 based cartridges. Like the 06s as well. I had to think if I had any "new" cartridges. I guess the "6.5-08" from 1997 qualifies (aka .260 Rem).
My .270 for some reason is more uncomfortable to shoot from a bench than the same rifle in heavier cartridges. :noidea: Would never get rid of it though.

Gunwriters back in the day had tremendous stroke on what you used. Jack O Connor took us on trips we would never get to go on.Through reading we lived vicariously through them gun writers.Yes I know how to read. O Connor made me want a 270,Camp Perry 1000 yard shoots made me want 308. We were greatly influenced by the old time gun writers

31 thousands of an inch was not the problem, it was bullet design and shot placement.
You might be right.
Didn't think having a kid growed me up that much over 1 year tho.
My kid tells me to this day I'll never grow up.
At 63 I'm not sure I want to.
But that dirty 06 has killed more deer than I can count.
Loaned it to a buddy to take to Colorado one year and he brought back a Elk and a Muley Buck.
Back when Colorado was affordable.

A 06 has taken everything that walks the planet.

And all I've ever used was the old Remington Core Lokt.

180 PSP In the 06.

150 SP in the 270. The heaviest I could find at the time.
I did find a couple deer I shot with the 270.

But I like that instant gratification of watching that buck drop right where he stands, before the sound of the shot ever hits his ears.

I like a 1/4 bore. I think I'd look at the 7mag before I bought a 270. I bet the 270 would shoot tighter groups though
7mm mag was my first deer rifle I bought with my own money at 18. Winchester model 70 I would shoot a 12x12 cardboard box at 700 yards with it out in an open field by the house I grew up in using my buddies dads reloads.

Give me .270 for whitetail, or most anything in North America. I've taken a few animals. There is nothing better.
.30/06 same deal. It’s a great round, and more versatile than anything else, IMO.
.243 is outstanding. Great round for whitetail…Excellent ballistic co-efficiency for what is….I always thought .243 should have been the round Eugene Stoner built the AR platform around.
I’ve seen a lot of bad luck with .308…Just my experience. I know more than a few who have had the same experience. Great round, great man stopper, not the best for deer, IMO. I’ve never hunted with .308 because of what I’ve seen, up close and personal. I would deer hunt with a .243 Win any day over a .308…I know, I’m crazy, but I’m 46 years in the deer woods crazy.

We go with what we know.

Happy 100th to the .270win. My favorite deer round of all time. And no, I’m not a fudd or a boomer, but thanks anyway.

Every round I mentioned is an old round. They work.
