On my range we use blue guns for basic training, If a functional weapon is used I have a rule that will never change...Draw weapon down range remove magazine move the slide to the rear locked and then visually and physically inspect the weapon to make sure it is cleared..At which point I have two safety officers check weapon and also verify that the weapon is clear..I let the slide go forward at that point,,then point down range and shoot..That being said I lock the slide to the rear and holster..This is a stead fast rule that does not change...When you cut corners you make mistakes..As an Instructor that will always be the Protocol. DD
