AR 15 gas block question

So I'm in the process of building an AR and had an interesting thought; What would happen if you fired a live round without a gas block or tube? would the gun blow up? Just curious, I have no intentions on firing mine in such a way without expert advice.

It will be a single fire. You would have to manually charge it every time.

I understand that part. I'm just wondering if it would hurt the gas port on the barrel or the handguard(free-floated style)

Won't hurt the barrel. May damage the handguard, but probably not. Will jack up your hand if it's covering the port area.

Yeah, might end up with a piercing you didn't want/need! Kind of like the revolver finger trimming.
