Just a hypothesis, but I believe it's due to the hippo's natural habitat origin. I've been in many a black home and have seen several different styles of furnishings. Same for many cultures.

Easy there are certain races that would own any number of things that any other race wouldnt. Just like with cars certain races are more likely to drive certain makes and models..

I like it a lot and I am not sure I'd want to own, but for a different reason than style. I'm pretty sure I'd inadvertently spill drinks about once a week setting a glass in the wrong spot. It's very neat though.
