Best Starter Sports Motorcycle for a tall guy

I'd check out a Kawasaki Versys, or Ninja 650. They have enough power to safely maneuver through traffic, but more upright riding position which I think is best for learning on. The Versys is taller and more upright, the Ninja 650 is halfway between that and a sport bike. You can find both used for less than $3k.

Understand that the slow speed stuff is MUCH more difficult to master than highway speed cruising. Take a class and learn to properly ride and how to control the bike at slow speeds. Also, yes, full gear is critical.

A fairing "puffs up" a motorcycle considerably, making tall guys look less like they are humping a football while riding them. But it also is vulnerable to crash and tip over damage, which you should assume you will do a few times while learning to ride.

That its why bikes with half or quarter fairings like the before mentioned Versys, or the FZ6 etc. are a good choice. The less plastic on them to break the better.

Get a VStrom 650. Plenty of power for solo interstate cruising (it will do 2 up, not as much fun in my view), has some off road pretense, IF and WHEN you get the skills, super cheap to run and rather comfortable. While I had the pick of the stable- an FZ1, Triumph Sprint 1050, VStrom 1K, Honda VF750, Kawasaki Ninja 650- I kept the V Strom 650 and sold the rest. 50,000 trouble free miles! I am 6'2", only mods were the Suzuki tall touring saddle and IMS footpegs.

I'm a little confused to why some folks are recommending a cruiser as a first bike, I really dont think that is they way to go Cruisers are severely limited in their maneuverability compared to all other classes of motorcycles except maybe trike and sidecar bikes. dont get me wrong I have had a few cruisers and thoroughly enjoy them for what they are. and that is not a good starter.
