building carport on top of the driveway

Hey,

Two car carport(wood), with metal roof. Will be going on top of a driveway.
Can the wood be on concrete driveway? Or I have to have piers? I dont want to damage the driveway with the load of the carport.

Your driveway is more than likely only 4” thick max. It is not designed to support that kind of weight.

You need piers under the load bearing posts. Pressure treated wood in contact with concrete.

A vehicle is also 4-6000 lbs where a stick built garage could weigh up to 30-60,000 lbs

I think it really depends on how the weight will be supported. Of you are building a “pole-barn” type carport the load will be concentrated under each pole. This loads will more than likely crack the concrete. Also just a note.....I would anchor this. You would be surprised how little wind it would take to lift the whole carpet.

I build decks and outdoor living areas, including carports and garages for a living.
You would have to have the concrete cut out where the posts would sit and pour footers.
Use 6x6 posts, notched for 10 inch lvl beams.

Just dig and pour piers outside the edge of the driveway then you get the full Benefit of the driveway
