Legally it’s perfectly fine to ship yourself a handgun however UPS and FedEx have pretty much stopped accepting firearms except from FFL’s.

Yes to yourself and you have to be there to sign for it. Which makes not freaking sense but that is what it says. I have looked into it before.

Odd are that shipping it taken down would make it to you via UPS or FedEx. And it wouldn't be like you're committing a crime, just breaking their stupid policy about an FFL having to be on one side of the shipment.

That being said, if they do find it they will probably turn it over to the cops. Even if you didn't lose it forever it would probably be a hassle to get it back.

Safest bet would be to have your friend take it to a gunsmith for 'cleaning' or 'repair' and have them send it back via any carrier they want (incl. USPS). They should be able to mail it right to your door that way.
