Can you make biscuits from scratch?

I use whole wheat flour a lot of times for biscuits with tablespoon of baking powder and baking soda pinch of salt 2 cups whole wheat flour cut up stick of frozen butter and mix then add small amount of butter milk and mix together till just moist enough to stick together well. I put little flour on my hands and pinch off piece the size of large egg and roll around in hands and put in greased baking pan pressing down with back of fingers. Bake at 425 till browned on bottom and turn top unit to high and brown top of biscuits . Great with sorghum syrup! Mama used to make these about once a week when I was growing up instead of regular self rising flour.

Asked my wife to text me her grandma's biscuit recipe. Here's what she sent.

"Well, it's not really a recipe. She kept flour in a bowl all the time. You get Crisco the size of an egg and buttermilk. Put it in the bowl of flour. Using your hands, you mix the Crisco and the buttermilk, pulling a little bit of flour from the edges until you form a sticky blob of dough. Put it on a floured surface and pinch off a small piece, roll it in your hands to make a small ball and put it on a pan. Then pat it flat with the back of your fingers.

If you want a video, there is a lady I follow that makes them almost exactly like Grandmama did, except she rolls them out and cuts them."

Here's that lady's video. My wife has a video she took of her grandma, but it's VHS.

Those are called cat head biscuits and they taste amazing. Why cat head? Because they’re the size and shape of a cat’s head.

I started making them after reading about it in a book. Ugly as sin, but tasted great!

My wife calls them womp biscuits, cause you have to womp them on the counter to open the tube.

Yep, I heard a southern woman use the expression "womp biscuits" about 30 years ago for the first time. Or "whomp" biscuits. Then I believe I heard Lewis Grizzard make reference to them in one of his books or articles He was a funny guy Anyhow, the term stuck in my memory.

I don't actually bake anything in my oven, but I suppose I could do whomp biscuits if I read the instructions on the cardboard tube before I mangled it beyond recognition.

You should try the ones at Red Lobster!! They make a mix you can buy as well. Not really for breakfast, unless you like seafood for breakfast.

You peel the cover off first. It ain't that hard. I can do it.......

Growing up my mama made a pan of biscuits everyday and sit on top of stove, remembering getting off the school bus a and take your finger and poke a hole and pour cane syrup in it for our snacks before supper.i just wish my kids and grandkids could enjoy a day like we had growing up in 60s and 70s.most families were broke as hell and full of love.
