Car will not start.

Here is how it all works...

Battery stores power and operates the starter motor via a relay known as the starter solenoid when you turn the key to START.

Once the car is running, the alternator recharges the battery and provides electrical power for the electrical items.

For the car to stop running while driving, the alternator may have stopped working and the battery power was drained. The battery being dead is a result of the alternator not working, but the battery is not the cause of the problem. Also, the starter may be bad, but that would not cause the engine to quit while driving.

You can get a cheap volt meter at the auto parts store or home depot. The battery should have 12.5 volts with the engine off. You can turn the key to see what the battery voltage drops to with a load - it should stay above 11.0 volts. If you get a jump start by connecting jumper cables to another cars battery and the engine will start, that shows the starter is OK. Then remove the cables and see what the voltage is at the battery - the alternator should be puting out 13.6 volts or so...

GOOD LUCK

All electricals could appear fine even if the battery or alternator is bad.

If the car is a manual, you can always roll start it. Put it in 2nd gear and have it pushed up to 10mph or so then pop the clutch
