Lots of folks are doing their fall bait plots these days. The cost of fuel and fertilizer can make for an onerous task. Most anything grown from fine seed can be sown on barely prepared soil, but most will require lime and fertilizer. There are some things you can do easily and that save the cost of fertilizer. Rape and rye are classics that'll grow with nothing more than being scattered on bare ground. Another scheme is to plant to fix fertilizing elements in the soil by planting different species at different times to benefit each in turn. Planting buckwheat in the summer will put phosphorous in the soil and provide a plot for early bow season. The phosphorous will benefit winter peas planted while deer are feeding on acorns. The peas in turn make a late season plot and fix what little nitrogen buckwheat will need the next summer. Winter peas make out fine when broadcast over bare ground. No fertilizer is required.

This plot is being used for food and bed by deer. This was put in with a brush cutter, tiller and $20 worth of seed.
