Interesting that they got him through the glass, within 11 shots. It was my understanding that shooting through glass was ineffective due to redirection during penetration. More likely the .556 or pistol rounds that succeeded?

Not ineffective, but windshields are multi layered and angled.
They actually deflect downward if they penetrate, as long as you account for that it you should be good.
Some weaker rounds my bounce and deflect skyward.
Did a good bit of testing at the range back in the day. .40 rounds will make absolute Swiss cheese out of a Ford contour. Front to back penetration, unless the engine stops the round.
