rather than have plain gunpowder for a fire starter in your survival kit, what about a mixture of cotton, vaseline, and gunpowder? Or steel wool instead of cotton, or mixed with cotton? I'm sure you could add some things to gunpowder to make it burn longer, at just as hot or even hotter, but without so much risk of an explosion.

Be careful burning it. Wayne Mayes, arguably the greatest skeet shooter ever, died from complications secondary to burns received when powder he was burning flared up and caught his clothes on fire. He had decades of reloading and powder handling experience.
