Do you notice any difference in the taste of deer?

So does the moisture. Ever tried to grill a steak that's been soaking in water for a few days?

Always put my deer meat in ice and let drain and never had a problem with dryness

Iv'e done that with 90 % of the deer iv'e killed, leave the drain open and let the blood water run out. When you take the meat out it's white, put it on the counter and it turns back red. Never heard getting meat wet in ice is bad for it.

I didn't know it would turn back red!
As a general rule wetting even your veggies after you pick them is a no no, because it aids bacterial growth.......

Not sure if its been mentioned, but deer that have been run by dogs for a couple hours taste significantly different than a deer from a tree stand.

I have killed over a hundred deer and processed most of those at home .

Those that were done at the processor were all done by huckabys down in digby .

I have had a fair amount given to me over the years as well.

Shot everything from yearlings to mature rutting bucks and even one big 10 that was both rutting and run by dogs.

I've only had one deer that the meat was near inedible . It was hit and then took three shots to the head to kill it. It was so tuff that you couldn't hardly chew it :-(

Last year I dropped a doe and had her in the freezer in 30 min... Let her hang 8 days

I did gut her as soon as she dropped though.

Major difference in meat flavor.
