I have nothing against killing them. Another method I've heard about from when I use to trap was tie pieces of ribbon or tinsel like you would have on a tacky Christmas tree. Also I've heard and seen people take metallic plates or even plastic plates and tie them to post or something. Something about them blowing around in the wind like that is supposed to deter the birds.

P.s. As a fishermen I have the same feelings about them as you do. They are disgusting. HOW DO THEY POOP SO MUCH!?

I just play some Fla/Ga line and they drop right out of the sky. It does make the meat taste funny though.
