Help! Vacations that aren't the beach?!

Pigeon Forge, Helen, and Panama City. Three of the worst tourist trap gimmicky places in the South East.
I would agree 110% and add Tybee Island. I don't understand NOT wanting to go to the beach although right now it's just too damn hot. And it's the height of yankee season. I really like Yulee and Fernandina Beach/Amelia Island. We spent the night on the Outer Banks on the edge of Nag's Head in 2014 . We stayed a a real vintage picture postcard motor court that was really nice for the money. But again if beach is out you don't wanna go there.
My mom takes my daughter to somewhere in North GA every year called Apple Mountain kinda between Cleveland and Helen. They seemed to dig that. And best I can remember from the early 90s you can go rafting in Helen. My only concern is that everywhere you could pick within reasonable distance right now is hot as hell.
On top of that you have to make sure you aint close to any BLM terrorist rallies.

Ok guys, so what do you all with younger kids do besides the beach for a summer vacation? This needs to be something within 8 hours at most of a drive from the Atlanta area with things to do younger kids would like. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Trip will be prior to the end of summer.

Most likely we won't stay a week, so something with 3 or 4 days worth of "things to see" would work.

A current idea is Chattanooga. What we'll do there I have no idea, but that's an idea my wife has.
Cherokee NC, kids stuff Mom and Dad stuff and stuff for all three..let me know how you do at the tables...LOL!

Beach is just boring. I can drink Coors Light under a shade tent in my backyard.

Best kept secret,Cades Cove ,Townsend Tenn. The quiet side of the mountains.
Plenty of wildlife, hiking, tubing go carts, good food, and just a short drive to Pigeon Forge if you have to..
Or go toward Maryville for flea markets and shopping......
Going back again in September for another week of camping in the Cove.....

Road trip to Washington DC if the kids are old enough to appreciate it. Spend 2-3 days there. Take a guided tour. Then see more stuff on your own. Tour the FBI, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving (U.S. mint), Arlington Cemetery, the White House, Capital, Lincoln and Wash. Monuments.

And the Smithsonian Musueum, and the NRA H.Q. In nearby VA.

On the way back, do Dollywood /Gatlinburg for some lighter, more silly and less historical fun.

I would do a Civil War Battle Field vacation, see the Battle fields and museum's of the Civil War. Allot, of these places will be gone soon, because of modern building. I did a trip like this with my family in the state of Virgina. Started with Gen. Lee old home ended with Arlington cemetery. I'm a big history buff. You can get a brochure of all the Civil War sites from any history museum. Good luck
