This has been an interesting read. Sniper22 mentioned being 'poor', and that's part of the equation. It's cheaper to sweeten things with HFCS than real sugar. It's not that either of them is great for you, it's just that the food manufacturers can make more $ by using HFCS. Now that people realize it's garbage they'll pay a premium to get real sugar in the form of the Mexican Coca-Cola, no HFCS Ketchup/BBQ sauce, etc. Wheat has also been bastardized to an extent that makes eating a piece of wheat bread cause a worse insulin response than table sugar. Most of our food is crap, so the more you can stay away from processed/pre-packaged food the better. This is a 2-sided coin, however. A lot of these 'innovations' also allow the masses to survive on relatively cheap food.
