I got a few PM's from this post. I will get a couple different price packages together and let everyone know. I only deal in commercial grade equipment no "Box Store" stuff. Give me a day or two and I will have some number options for those that maybe interested.

Thanks Jbum

IP cameras are definitely best but more expensive than analog. I use more of the HD analog than IP because you can get a nice varifocal HD analog for about 1/2 cost of a good fixed lens IP. I've pulled out plenty of Qsee and other cheaper cameras like Salty also.

I've been running an 8 camera zmodo system from Amazon. 2 years now. Max quality is 480 line so you can make out the model of a car fine but not a license plate. 2 camera inside rest outside. If you want 4 then I suggest get an 8 camera dvr. I'm ready for a better system with HD but not price. Cameras record for 30 seconds on a motion detect.
It does OK for $300 but one day I'll move up.

A crazy idea for a remote camera is a car battery and a car dash cam. Amazon has a gs8000 for $25. That's pretty good. I was wanting to put it in the back of lot near the train tracks and game cameras are so expensive and they shouldn't be.

I'm gonna look up some of the above ideas posted....

I own a security company. We do cameras often. The best bang for your buck is DVR. You can do POE cams, or coaxel. Wifi cameras are much easier but they will eat some bandwidth and don't alwags have as clear of a picture as wired cams. If you are doing it yourself and don't want to pay someone you can pm me. I can help a brotha out with my dealer cost. Cheaper than buying online or at a store.

I install security camera systems for a living, in my opinion hard wire is the best way to go. A lot of the WiFi systems will slow down your internet, Be careful with the systems from the big box stores, most of them are not worth the money. Poor quality cameras with inferior IR cut filters, which leads to poor camera images. Over half of my installs are replacing the systems like Swann, Q See and Night Owl. i would be happy to answer any questions any of you might have.

As I see no point in re-inventing the wheel when someone who does this for a living is available.

Is there a DIY system you recommend and I can buy or pieces you recommend and I can buy?

What does the typical system totally consist of for a 3bdrm 1 story brick ranch home with 3 entrance doors and 11 windows.

Samsung makes a dvr kit. 4 channel 4 cams. Supply 60 feet of wire per cam. Everything is labeled and super easy. The hardest part it drilling holes for the lines(where you want the camera).
