How do I remove rust from my shotgun finish?

My Dad pulled out his Browning A5 Stalker model with flat finish and had some serious surface rust. It was on the bolt as well. What is the best method for removing the rust?
I hace used a fine steel wool on my knockaround rifle but don't want to take a chance on messing up the Browning.

0000 steel wool and oil is what I use. Oil soak the steel wool, use only a minimum amount of pressure. I've found Kroil to be excellent in penetrating surface rust.
