How to make a Zeer pot (temporary cold (or at least cool) storage)

We used to cool water bottles in Iraq in a similar fashion. We would soak a sock in water, put a water bottle in the sock and hand it outside our humvees. In like 20 minutes we had cool water.

The zeer pots work pretty good depending on how large of a pot you use and the amount of sand. I made on in March for a instruction demonstration at school. I was surprised by the outcome. They do work, but your gonna need a very big pot to get something really cold.

I learned this trick from a returning Gulf War 1 vet back when I was in high school. I worked outside all summer and he would wrap his water bottle in a wet t-shirt and leave it in the sun. It cooled it off nicely.
