How does one go about doing this? Should I ever decide to do so. I am guessing I would have to have a Class III FFL do the transfer and hold it until the paperwork comes back.

You can remove the upper and sell the lower as a regular lower. You are not required but it is recommended to send a letter to the ATF to take it off the registry.
