Because money talks. People are often short of cash, but have plenty of stuff to trade. Stuff is not necessarily worth what you paid for it due to depreciation.

I would at it as the item is valued at $175 but they need cash and are willing to take a loss ($100) to move it.
 
How so? If I have a $500 rifle for sale (wholesale value) and you have a Glock 19 Gen 4 that you've assigned a $700 "trade value" to, how hard is it to sell the $700 Glock for cash to buy the $500 rifle? I'd think a $700 Glock offered at $500 cash would sell pretty quickly.

All this is tongue in cheek, LOL.
