Most of the replies have made valid points. I would suggest that you go to a range and fire both yourself. Both have adequate stopping power. Just remember, shot placement, shot placement, shot placement.

If that's the one your most comfortable with then that's all that matters................40 is an excellent caliber

I'd buy the 9mm simply because it will be easier to sell/trade it if you want to. Performance in the real world won't be enough to matter.
