Legal to shoot a coyote?

Last week my cat vanished. I've looked, called and rode around looking for him. A few nights ago coyotes were outside my fence out back
I live out in the rural area but there are houses close by. Can I shoot them if they come too close and if so is a 22LR enough to take a coyote ?

Call your local animal control, i live in a more populated area than you do and was told to shoot onsite. When i told them i live in a subdivision their reply was don’t miss.

OK, good news. They're getting bolder, they'll wander around the outside of the privacy fence where my Yorkies go. I liked my cat allot but I love my dogs
