Maybe a dumb question

Do you think it would be better to build a .300 purposefully for a can, and occasionally shoot light target rounds if you wanted?

Or try to get 5.56 slow enough to be an effective suppressed round. Im genuinely interested.
Definitely no on the subsonic 5.56. Might as well be shooting a heavy 22lr round.

I know others have probably been more successful than me, but I have trouble getting a 300 to shoot both supers and subs reliably without an adjustable gas block. Mine are dedicated to shoot either subs or supers.

Bummer, I wanted a do-it-all. I was really hoping .300 was the answer.

Yea I tried to tell my buddy that when he was talkin about a suppressed .17, man that dude argued with me all day when I told him to just go buy a BB gun.

Exactly! LMAO!

Subsonic is subsonic and energy is dictated almost exclusively by bullet weight at that point. Some folks get really bent out of shape when I point out that their subsonic 300 only has about the same energy as a 45 ACP. I think it's light for deer hunting and near foolish for bear hunting.

I expect the 458 Socom shooting expanding 500 grain subs is going to eventually catch on as the go to suppressed hunting round in an AR
platform.

Wow 7 pages. Thats a record for me. The reason I asked is I don’t know anything about 300. I really never considered it until I saw a DD for $1200 that I thought was a good price for the brand as to what Ive seen. I like to buy quality in every thing I buy. Learned a lot here. Thanks. Still on the fence with this.
Hey MrJim if it was a friend asking about the 300 I would tell him to skip it.I have one in an SBR and it is great for my wife to hunt with but if you really want performance in the AR 15 platform go checkout the 6.5 Grendel it is the most capable round short to midrange.
DD builds 6.5g and if you want the most for your money get a smith to build you one . Then you can specify a Krieger barrel,a trued up upper reciever, adjustable gas block,BCG of your liking.

I tried to explain to him that speed is its only attribute, and thats why my .17's were about to punch holes through the spinner targets and his .22 was barely leaving a mark.

.458 is interesting, so is .350 legend...

I've seen several 300bo here lately for less than 556x45 on gundeals.com and such. I better read more thread , but I wonder what's up with that? I'm talking factory uppers, lowers, and complete

Someone needs to address this question.

I have a reasonably good set of hand tools, good collection of power tools, and no experience building an AR-15.

It appears to me that most of the parts can be purchased as assembled sub-assemblies.

So realistically how much actual time would it take for someone who's never owned an AR15 to build one?

If I’m building from completely loose parts, takes me about 2 hours to build an AR.

if you ever want to build one, come over to my shop and I’ll give you a hand. If you’re not anywhere near building one, I can have you over when I’m building one for someone else.

Probably because it was overhyped and guys didnt realize what they were getting. I can see the bubbas now....

"You mean I have to adjust the gas to run subs??? Isnt a .300BO the same as a .300 win mag, I mean they both have .300 in front of the name? I thought I was getting .308 win performance in an AR15 platform? What, it takes a year to get my can?? I cant get ammo for a penny a round?? I shot a deer in the ass with FMJs and it didnt drop it!!! This round is stupid...Im going to dump it for the next hot thing."

Boom market flooded with ARs, and you know the saying, the few who scream (complain) the loudest are heard the most.
